I thought I knew a lot about silhouettes before I started this process. I understood the basic idea of a silhouette, and I was pretty sure that I could crank one out on the computer pretty easily. I quickly found out that making a silhouette that is crisp, clean and clear is a challenge, and one that I do not have mastery of. I started out trying to color over an image in Photoshop, but found that I don't have enough proficiency with the selection or brush tools to be satisfied with my results. My batch of Odd Creatures was done this way, and while they are some of my favorite inventions, I don't feel like they are the crispest of images. For the rest of the images, I drew my shapes by hand in a pencil sketch, then inked over the outside lines and erased the innards. Once I scanned them onto the computer, I messed with the brightness and contrast to make them into a silhouette. While these also aren't as clear and perfect as the silhouettes that we were given examples of, I feel like I'm on track to a better silhouette with this method.
I loved working in silhouette. I found it to be a fascinating way of thinking; instead of focusing on an expression or detail, I let myself focus on shapes and feelings. Before, all of my characters had a tendency of being carbon copies of each other. In silhouette, I think about how they are going to stand out against the page, and what will set them apart from the silhouette next to it. I ended up with some creations that are similar, but widely a very diverse set of images. I don't have a favorite silhouette, but there are creatures that I would love to return to in the future and develop. Silhouette will definitely be a part of my creative process from now on.
